Citizens on Patrol is a concept that originated in Western Canada.  Ordinary citizens supplement  police patrols to help reduce crime by keeping a neighbourly watch over their communities. Patrols watch for any unusual and/or criminal activity, and report  such incidents to the police for any necessary follow-up. Complete "kits" and communications gear are provided for patrollers. All our patrollers have official photo ID cards and log in with the RCMP when on  patrols.
Break-ins and vandalism can occur anywhere, and at any time. Our police force, the RCMP (Tantallon Office), covers a very wide geographic area, and actively seeks community partners to help fight crime and keep our neighbourhoods safe.  In the summer of 1998, concerned residents along Prospect Road from Halifax to Peggy's Cove, and in sub-divisions served by Route 333, formed a Citizens on Patrol Unit.
Prospect Road Citizens on Patrol is incorporated as a Society in the Province of Nova Scotia, and has charitable tax status with the Canada Revenue Agency. Charitable tax receipts are provided for all financial contributions.

Citizens on Patrol have neither the authority nor the mandate to make arrests, nor
to take any action that might jeopardize their own safety or that of the public. The role of Citizens on Patrol is to simply observe, make notes and report. In some areas, you may see our Citizens on Patrol signs letting people know we are active.

We meet monthly (except July and August) on the 2nd Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Brookside. We exchange information,  receive updates from the RCMP, and receive training.
